Tudor Revival
Set in a 1920s brick Tudor-style home in Maplewood, NJ, this project involved a full first-floor renovation and sensitive exterior restoration. Our goal was to modernize the space for our clients, a professional couple and their teen daughter, while preserving the home’s historic character. Every update—from the relocated kitchen and matched oak trims to the repurposed original doors and pewter knobs—was meticulously executed to feel both intentional and timeless.
The renovation included the kitchen, living room, dining room, mudroom, and two powder rooms. Now, the family enjoys a comfortable, cohesive, and character-rich home that honors its architectural past while supporting their modern lifestyle.

Moving the kitchen to the rear of the house enhanced flow, inviting in natural light, and opening up scenic views to the backyard. Stained oak ceiling beams echo the original hand-hewn living room beams, while a custom island in the same material adds warmth and richness, serving as a central gathering spot for the family.
The kitchen’s custom plaster range hood mirrors the tapered silhouette and scale of the original fireplace in the living room. A French-made La Cornue range offers professional-grade performance and a bold visual anchor.

The living room preserves the home’s 1920s charm with antique steel windows and newly crafted stained oak trims, matched to the originals. Light furnishings with pops of jewel tones provide contrast to the rich woodwork, creating a new favorite gathering spot for the family.

Custom inset cabinetry with Shaker-style doors and drawers reinforces the home’s traditional character. A spacious walk-in pantry is concealed within the millwork, while a bar nook with a patina-brass backsplash is seamlessly integrated.

A Tudor arch between the dining room and kitchen, inspired by original arches elsewhere in the home, creates a graceful sense of connection and flow.

A tailored mix of textures and tones, paired with clean-lined furnishings and statement lighting, makes this newly connected dining space a perfect spot for entertaining friends and family.

A much-needed mudroom now anchors the home’s secondary entry. Built-in cabinetry offers practical storage with traditional detailing. The checkerboard floor pattern continues into the adjacent powder room, where a patterned Schumacher wallcovering creates a moody vibe. The salvaged steel window was set into a newly created opening.

Exterior improvements included refreshing the brickwork, restoring an original lantern, and patching brickwork with authentic reclaimed materials. New cedar siding and carefully crafted window trims respect the home’s heritage.

In the living room, a new built-in crafted from stained oak with painted lacquered fronts houses dual TVs, cleverly concealed behind a sliding brass mesh panel. Custom patina brass pulls and Schumacher wallpaper lining the bookcase add texture and charm. Thoughtfully proportioned and detailed, the piece honors the home’s historic woodwork while enabling the family to enjoy two sports games at once.

Jade-green wall tiles paired with stained oak trims bring richness to a powder room, which features a custom medicine cabinet framed in oak, a classic washstand sink and restored antique steel window.
