Hickory Modern Victorian
A family of four with a pet dog, the owners of 22 Hickory needed a playful and fully livable home that was more conducive to their lifestyle. They yearned for an understated home that was laid-back and casual, but still preserved the authenticity of their 1908 Victorian farmhouse.
Idea Space’s whole-house renovation solution opened the dark, traditional layout to reveal a more transparent, low-key, and light-filled informal first floor, together with two enhanced upper floors that include a full master suite and an additional bathroom.
Double glass front doors lead to a generous entry with a new built-in storage bench, restored, wood-railed staircase and art glass windows. A more open and visually connected first floor facilitates better interaction, rejecting doorways in favor of extra-large cased openings that echo the home’s historical heritage and inserting additional exterior glass doors for easy access to the back deck and wraparound porch.
Rather than lose a rather rare historical feature, Idea Space repurposed the existing American chestnut trim, which was dark and dingy. Completely stripping the woodwork to its lighter, natural state conserved the historical character of the house while reflecting a more modern warmth.
Following this sustainable approach, Idea Space used rustic reclaimed oak—much of it bearing the characteristic wear and charming wormholes from old barns—for a large island and open shelving in the kitchen. Additional dark chestnut trim found throughout the dining room was stripped and reused as powder room wainscoting.
For the new spacious master suite, Idea Space custom designed a new dressing room and closet, along with a four-fixture bathroom with a custom teak vanity. Meanwhile, an additional children’s bath on the second floor leaves room for the family’s two boys to grow.
The result is a light-filled, fresh and comfortable home with all new systems upgrades, ready for this fun family to enjoy for years to come!
